The charm is working
The etymology of the word Guelhouit could be derived from the Breton word Kel er hoed, which translates into "wooded hamlet". On the edge of a hill and close to the river Saar, this corresponds perfectly to the place we invite you to discover.
The chapel dedicated to Our Lady and Saint Isidore was built in 1683, on the site of an older sanctuary, thanks to indulgences granted by Pope Clement XIV to the brotherhood of Saint Isidore. A two-storey sacristy built in alignment to the east is an addition from the second quarter of the 18th century.
Open-air oratory
The pardon was so popular that in 1885, Abbot Constant Daniel had an open-air sanctuary built, like the Notre-Dame-de-Quelven chapel, the Scala Santa, by the architect Douillard.
The chapel of Notre-Dame du Guelhouit has been classified as a Historic Monument since 2003.
The pardon ceremony is celebrated on the 1st Sunday of July.
