Mills

Aller en bas

Water or wind…

From the Latin "molinum" from "mola", millstone, a mill is a machine for grinding cereal grains to make flour and, by analogy, a machine for grinding various other substances, both food and non-food.

Watermills, older than windmills used the energy from the current of a watercourse. There was plenty of them in Locminé but they did not subsisted…

Windmills use the kinetic energy of the wind and transform it into a rotary motion through adjustable wings : they are the ancestors of wind turbines ! In Brittany, a type of mill called "petit pied" had a cylindrical granite base, topped by a corbelled tower of larger diameter: we have an example in St Allouestre.

Still in operation, Hillary's mill in Bignan can be visited during heritage days.
